Follow His Instruction
Jesus came to him and said, “Launch your net on the other side.” And when they had done this, they caught a great number of fish, and their net was breaking. So they signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink. Luke 5:4-5
Instruction: detailed information telling how something should be done, operated, or assembled.
Recently my youngest son Zeph has discovered the stairs in our house! Which has caused us to purchase a baby gate to protect him from falling down them. Now, you would think a baby gate should only take a few minutes to install. Let me just say in our case that was not so. And, in fact took 3 of us, some power tools and about 2 hours. I know you are wondering why in the world did it take that many people and that long? Ha! Well, because we didn’t follow the instructions that were given. After installing and uninstalling quite a few times we finally got it. All we had to do from the beginning to avoid the time wasted, frustration and exhaustion was to follow the simple instructions.
I would like to suggest that miracles often times are birthed by following instruction through obedience in faith.
Let me be the first one to tell you we serve a God that is still in the miracle working business. (Matthew 19:26) He is the same yesterday, today and forever. (Hebrews 13:8) I speak from a place where I know this to be very true. My husband and I have received some pretty radical miracles from financial miracles to healing miracles and everything in between!
Oxford dictionary defines miracle as a surprising and welcome event that is not explicable by natural or scientific laws and is therefore considered to be the work of a divine agency.
Our miracles often times require us to be obedient in faith to God’s voice. We must start listening for the instruction of the Lord and obey in faith without hesitation. As children of God we hear the voice of our Shepherd and do not follow the voice of another. (John 10:27)
Let’s take a look a few miracles in the Word of God where instructions were given, obedience in faith followed, and miracles were birthed.
Jesus performed a miracle while revealing His glory to His disciples by coming to the rescue at a wedding in Cana in Galilee when there became a wine shortage. The instruction: fill the vases with water and pour into the guest glasses. Miracle: The water poured into the glasses became the best wine of the evening. (John 2:7-9)
Jesus fed the multitude to further show His love and compassion in a miraculous way. Instruction: Bring the 5 loaves and 2 fish to me. Miracle: He blessed and broke and gave the loaves to the disciples; and the disciples gave to the multitudes. So they all ate and were filled, and they took up twelve baskets full of the fragments that remained. (Matthew 14:19-20)
The Lord had given Jericho into the hands of Joshua but first he had to follow the instruction. Instruction: March around the walls one time for 6 days and on the 7th day you shall blow the trumpets and shout with a great shout and the walls will come down. Miracle: And it happened when the people heard the sound of the trumpet, and the people shouted with a great shout, that the wall fell down flat. Then the people went up into the city, every man straight before him, and they took the city. (Joshua 6)
The Levitical priest carried Arc of Covenant into the Jordan and it divided. Instruction: take the Arc of the Covenant and carry it into the waters of Jordan. Miracle: And it shall come to pass, as soon as the soles of the feet of the priests who bear the ark of the Lord, the Lord of all the earth, shall rest in the waters of the Jordan, that the waters of the Jordan shall be cut off, the waters that come down from upstream, and they shall stand as a heap. (Joshua 3)
The widow who needed provision and food. Instruction: then he said, “Go, borrow vessels from everywhere, from all your neighbors—empty vessels; do not gather just a few. And when you have come in, you shall shut the door behind you and your sons; then pour it into all those vessels, and set aside the full ones.” Miracle: God multiplied the oil! She was able to pay off her debt and her and her sons lived off the rest. (2 Kings 4)
A man born blind. When Jesus had said these things, He spat on the ground and made clay with the saliva; and He anointed the eyes of the blind man with the clay. Instruction:He said to him, “Go, wash in the pool of Siloam”. So he went and washed. Miracle: came back seeing. (John 9:6-7)
Oh, how we are contending for miracles but we do not want to follow instructions and be obedient through faith. (James 2) How many times has God wanted to perform miracles on our behalf but we weren’t willing to follow the instruction? We are afraid of what people might think if we did what the Lord had asked of us. Or we think to ourselves, surely that wasn’t God asking me to do that? How many of us have missed financial miracles because we have refused to heed instruction of the Lord on tithing, alms and giving finding ourselves barely getting by, or on the brink of bankruptcy. (Malachi 3:8-10) How many parents have not heeded the uncompromising instructions from the book of Proverbs on child-rearing and have not seen their miracle of having a God-fearing, pure, praying, child?
Our key verse shows us how following a simple instruction can bring such blessing to not only us but those around us! They were tired and had labored all night to catch a single fish and came up short. Yet, in a moment the Lord spoke, they obeyed and now their boat was sinking with blessing!
Listen beloved, nothing is too hard for the Lord. (Jeremiah 32:27) Whatever miracle you are pressing in for, He can perform it! Do not lose heart in the waiting. Follow the instruction and wait with expectation for him to do immeasurably more than you have asked or imagined. (Ephesians 3:20) Miracles happen when God moves. Blind eyes are opened. (John 9) The deaf begin to hear. The dead are raised to life. The lame begin to walk. (Matthew 11:5) Strongholds are broken. (2 Corinthians 10:4) He is the Lord and He does not change. (Malachi 3:6) God is no respecter of person’s. What He does for one of His children He will do for another. (Romans 2:11)Everything is possible to him who believes. (Mark 9:23) We must put our faith into action and be obedient when He speaks. When the instruction is given, act. Your testimony will be that like Job’s God performs wonders that cannot be fathomed, miracles that cannot be counted. (Job 5:8-9)
Father God, thank you that you are still in the business of performing miracles today. Help us to listen for the instruction that will bring forth our miracle. We declare our testimony will be Deuteronomy 10:21 awesome wonders we see with your own eyes. We love you Lord and thank you by faith for our miracle. In Jesus name, amen.
