The perfect gift

And when they [the wise men] saw the star, they were so ecstatic that they shouted and celebrated with unrestrained joy. When they came into the house and saw the young child with Mary, his mother, they were overcome. Falling to the ground at his feet they worshiped him. Then they opened their treasure boxes full of gifts and presented him with gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Matthew 2:10-11 TPT

Searching for the perfect gift takes time and effort doesn’t it? So I’m curious, does anyone else love to shop for other people? Well, l must say I love shopping, but especially enjoy shopping at Christmas time! I try to take sometime to think about the person I am shopping for and deciding what gift would bring them joy and bless them. Oh, I almost forgot to mention my favorite part would have to be watching the persons reaction as they open it!Priceless! It brings me such joy to give gifts to others. You know, speaking of giving gifts I wonder what it must have been like to be the wise men who seeing the star, started their pilgrimage to bring their gifts to the Saviour of the world? Wow! Can you just imagine the anticipation they must have had?

This was definitely not your typical “baby shower” held in a nice space with delightful treats, beautiful decorations, an assortment of gifts ranging from car seats to high chairs, clothes, pacifiers, diapers and more. Surrounded by all your family and friends as you celebrate the anticipated arrival of your newest addition. No, this event would likely take place in a stable probably smelling like animals, under the night sky with a bright shinning star hovering over the child’s manager in the cool of the evening. The Son of God wrapped in a swaddling cloth laying in a bed of hay. The guest present, were an angel of the Lord joined by a huge angelic choir singing God’s praises, followed by shepherds, and wise men. The gifts presented were gold, frankincense, and myrrh. (Luke 2, Matthew 2) What a night that must have been for all present, to have witnessed first hand Jesus the Messiah as a newborn baby.

Our key verse says when the wise men saw the Christ child and they fell to the ground at his feet and they worshiped him. They opened their treasure boxes full of gifts and presented him with gold, frankincense, and myrrh. (Matthew 2:11) These gifts certainly aren’t what you would expect to be given to a new born child. So, then what is the big deal about these gifts anyways? These were more than luxurious gifts they signified Jesus’ future life and divine status. Scholars think that these three were chosen for their special spiritual symbolism about Jesus himself.

Gold is a very precious and valued commodity. In Scripture gold is often associated with Kings, things pertaining to kings, and kingdoms. (Genesis 2:11-12, Exodus 26:5) The gift of gold would signify Jesus’ honor, divine status and his kingship. (Revelation 14:14, 1 Kings 10:10) Frankincense is a symbol of worship and His priesthood. The Bible plainly teaches that Christ is our High Priest. He makes intercession for our sins, and He is the eternal sacrifice for our sins. (Hebrews 4:14-16) Frankincense is highly fragrant when burned and was therefore used in worship, where it was burned as a pleasant offering to God. (Exodus 30:34-38)The gift of frankincense to the Christ child was symbolic of His willingness to become a sacrifice, wholly giving Himself. (Leviticus 6:15, Revelation 5:8) Myrrh is a natural gum or resin extracted from a number of small, thorny tree species and was often times used as a herb in those days for burial rituals. Myrrh given to the Christ child would signify a death in the near future. (John 19:38-40)
